چکیده

A 46 year old man presented with dull right shoulder pain irradiating to the right upper arm. Physical examination showed right glenohumeral instability. There was no muscle atrophy. Radiography and an echogram of the right shoulder were normal. An EMG showed fibrillation potentials and positive sharp waves in the right infraspinatus muscle; recruitment of motor units was reduced on maximal voluntary contraction. The right supraspinatus muscle was normal. T1 weighted MRI of the right shoulder (figure A) disclosed an ovoid low signal intensity mass (white arrowheads) at the spinoglenoid notch, impinging on the suprascapular artery and nerve (small black arrows) between the supraspinatus (S) and infraspinatus (I) muscles. (D=deltoid) On T2 weighted gradient echo image (figure B), the mass had a homogeneous high signal intensity consistent with a paralabral (ganglion) cyst. Coronal T1 weighted imaging (figure C) confirmed the localisation of the mass (white and black arrowheads), astride the scapular spine (white arrows), compressing the suprascapular nerve (small black arrows). Until recently, the diagnosis of suprascapular nerve entrapment was only considered after development of marked weakness and atrophy of the supraspinatus or infraspinatus muscles. MRI in patients with non-specific shoulder pain now makes earlier detection possible. Ganglion cysts account for most lesions causing entrapment of the suprascapular nerve. Often, there is a history of weight lifting or of athletic shoulder activities. If conservative treatment fails or if there is marked muscle atrophy, surgical decompression is recommended.

Suprascapular Nerve Entrapment Caused by Protrusion of an Intraosseous Ganglion of the Glenoid into the Spinoglenoid Notch: A Rare Cause of Posterior Shoulder Pain

We describe a case of suprascapular nerve entrapment caused by protrusion of an intraosseous ganglion of the glenoid into the spinoglenoid notch. A 47-year-old man with left shoulder pain developed an intraosseous cyst in the left glenoid, which came into contact with the suprascapular nerve. The area at which the patient experienced spontaneous shoulder pain was innervated by the suprascapular...

Suprascapular nerve entrapment caused by an intraosseous ganglion of the scapula

RATIONALE Suprascapular nerve compression is a rare but important entity that is often missed in clinical practice. Nerve dysfunction caused by an intraosseous ganglion of the glenoid is extremely rare, to the best of our knowledge, only 1 case of suprascapular nerve entrapment due to an intraosseous ganglion cyst has been reported previously in the published literature. PATIENT CONCERNS We r...

Arthroscopic decompression of the suprascapular nerve at the spinoglenoid notch and suprascapular notch through the subacromial space.

Suprascapular nerve entrapment can cause disabling shoulder pain. Suprascapular nerve release is often performed for compression neuropathy and to release pressure on the nerve associated with arthroscopic labral repair. This report describes a novel all-arthroscopic technique for decompression of the suprascapular nerve at the suprascapular notch or spinoglenoid notch through a subacromial app...

Association of the area of sensory disturbance with the area of suprascapular nerve palsy.

PURPOSE To determine the association of the area of sensory disturbance with the area of suprascapular nerve (SSN) palsy in healthy volunteers and patients with SSN palsy. METHODS Five male and one female and healthy volunteers aged 23 to 44 (mean age, 32.2) years underwent an experiment of distal and proximal SSN block (at the spinoglenoid notch and suprascapular notch, respectively). A pinp...

Suprascapular nerve neuropathy secondary to spinoglenoid notch ganglion cyst: case reports and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION Suprascapular nerve neuropathy secondary to ganglion cyst impingement has increasingly been found to be a cause of shoulder pain. CLINICAL PICTURE We present 2 patients who complained of dull, poorly localised shoulder pain, which worsened with overhead activities. Magnetic resonance imaging showed ganglion cysts in the spinoglenoid notch. TREATMENT Both patients failed conserv...
